Introduction to AdWords
You and I have one thing in common: we are Google AdWords advertisers.
I don’t know about you, but I tried them for the first time, more than 2 years ago.
After a couple of months and 300 or so dollars, it became apparent that “this is not for me”.
These drab little ads had no appeal… and no results.
With the interest waning, they seemed to be destined for the Net Dump.
Suddenly last year, everybody started talking about the “new” AdWords.
And new they were!
Refurbished, remodeled, whatever term you want to use.
Much better presentation, much more user friendly system, and far greater reach.
By then, Google was the Search Engine, everybody wanted to be seen in.
It didn’t take long for marketing aficionados to realize that, at least in the “online realms”, this is an advertising medium, hard to beat.
For its effectiveness, the speed of delivery. And it’s easy to use.
But, is it really? Well, we have an argument here developing.
If you believe Google, all you need to do is to read their Help file and Editorial Guidelines. Having done that, you may start… filling Google’s coffers with money. Fortunately you and I, and many other newcomers, quickly realized that there’s more to it than simply following the rules.
Hence, the number of Google AdWords’ related publications that flooded the market.
Some good, offering detailed, experience based digest of the guidelines.
Others bad; no more than regurgitated information from the works of others. Little wonder, that according to recent studies, only 1 out of 10 who tried AdWords, made it a permanent (and profitable) addition to their marketing armory. The others, either left after a few disappointing campaigns, or carried on much longer. Alas, with losses.
Now, you may ask, who is the 1 out of 10 that is successful?
Well, it takes time, money (a lot!), and a resolve to “make it” good.
If money isn’t a problem, hire an experienced AdWords consultant. Most of them run campaigns for big (and not so big) businesses, with substantial budgets, and room for error. At the initial stages at least.
Unfortunately, I was not in a position to hire one. Why?
Do I have to spell it out? Money was scarce; worse still, so was time.
Most of my earnings were from affiliate programs (Commission Junction and Clickbank). The biggest discovery of these early days was the realization, that it actually is quite difficult to spend money profitably with Google.
Sure, you can lose a fortune quickly, if you’re clueless. Now, suppose you’ve got a fair idea of what you’re doing.
